The NFL’s Ten Best Throwback Uniforms, Part One (10 through 6)
When the Denver Broncos in 2009 brought out their original AFL uniforms from 1960, negative comments abounded. I actually liked the look. The socks have the Slim Goodbody tendon effect. The colors are retro modern and very autumn. The helmet has an old school collegiate look with the player’s number and a single stripe down the middle.
Below is a list of the best NFL uniforms from the past. Not all of these uniforms listed are necessarily used as their current throwbacks.
10. DALLAS COWBOYS (1960-63)
I despise the Cowboys, but their throwbacks are clean and classic.
9. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (1964-88)
San Francisco has kept it simple, embodying the maxim “Less is more.”
8. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (1986-91)
I like the symmetry of the gold pants, black jersey, and gold helmet. These uniforms have the white numeral instead of the gold, which is easier on the eyes. The colors and logo are original and represent New Orleans well.
7. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (1961-63)
There is a certain love affair with powder blue on a sports uniform, especially regarding the Chargers, who have embraced the old after a bad experiment with the navy uniforms. Talk about branding, this uniform features the lightning bolt from top to bottom—on the helmet, jersey, and pants.
6. ATLANTA FALCONS (1966-70)
When I was about five I became a fan of football, and the Falcons were the first team I represented on a pullover hoodie. There’s something cool about that black falcon on the red helmet.
What do you think of my picks so far? Do any of these uniforms deserve to be ranked higher? Are any of them so bad that they should never see the field again? Find out who the top five are next week at angledendathletics.com/action.
